It's Not the Sears tower anymore...
The tallest building in America is not called the Sears Tower anymore as of today...it is now the Willis Tower!
WHAT ABOUT THAT COOL NEW GLASS box in the SKY 103 stories up??
But here is another story about the Sears Tower…because that is where we live…in Chicago!
At the top of many skyscrapers, there is a public area, called an observation deck. Well, on the top of the Sears Tower, all 103 stories of it, there is a new Glass Bottom viewing deck. YIKES!
What is it? A glass box that extends off the side of the tower, with a glass floor and walls so it looks like you are hanging out in thin air, without wings! Or a parachute!
Again, may we repeat…YIKES!
The glass box in the sky can hold about five tons. Let’s hope that no one has eaten a large lunch.
It is interesting to think about how it feels to be in a city at such a great height, One of the facts about the Eiffel Tower that we always found so interesting is that it was one of the earliest structures built in the middle of the city, so it offered the first view of a city from a great height. Before that, people could stand on a large hill or moutain side and peer at a city from the outskirts, but to be in the MIDDLE of the city, now that was new!
A great writer about art and architecture, Robert Hughes, wrote that modern art started because of this new view of the city, that the Eiffel Tower offered a new perspective on the world for humans.
Wow, that is such a great idea that architecture influences so many other ideas and work in the world.
Makes you just want to run out and sign up for architecture school don’t it??
