Julia Morgan – Great Architect

Julia MorganJulia Morgan had many firsts. She was the first woman to graduate from the L’Ecole de Beaux Arts in 1901, the first woman to receive an architecture License in California and one of the first women to go to the University of California at Berkeley in civil engineering.

So being a woman who designed buildings back in the early part of the 1900’s granted her many firsts. However, the fact that she designed 700 buildings, 21 of which are either National Historic Landmarks or are on the National Register of Historic Places is an accomplishment for anyone, man or woman.

One of the most famous buildings that she designed is the Hearst Castle. “Hearst Castle featured 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, 127 acres (0.5 km2)[3] of gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, an airfield, and the world’s largest private zoo.”*
